If you’re interested in participating or want to learn more, please fill out the eligibility screening questions at: https://criticalpublichealth.org/nswe-screener

We are conducting a study to learn more about smoking in the lives of women in rural California. While there is a lot of research on smoking in general, much less is known about the experiences of women living in rural areas, especially across different stages of life. In this study, we will talk with women about their experiences and perspectives related to smoking. We want to hear directly from women in rural communities so that future research and programs reflect their realities. To learn more, email NSWESmokingStudy@criticalpublichealth.org or text/call us at (530) 235-6264.

Your perspective will help to produce knowledge and increase understanding of women’s experiences with smoking in rural communities. This knowledge can be used to guide future programs and research so that they are more in touch with real people’s lives and priorities.

This study is being conducted by the Center for Critical Public Health, a nonprofit research group that is not affiliated with any private or political funders. We are a group of researchers who focus on issues related to fair health policies and practices, especially those related to drug and alcohol use among groups that aren’t always given equal attention in public health.

This study also relies on the input and feedback of a Community Advisory Board. Our Community Advisors are women living in or near the study area who have relevant lived experience and/or professional expertise related to women’s health, tobacco use, and rural communities.

This study is funded by the Tobacco Related Disease Research Program (TRDRP), Grant #T35IR9479. TRDRP funds are allocated by the state of California out of taxes paid by Californians.

The results of this study will be made available in a public report, presentations, and peer-reviewed publications, which will be shared with policy makers, public health practitioners, and other health researchers. This research will help draw attention to the perspectives and experiences of women living in rural communities. Our goal is to ensure that insights from participants in this study are meaningfully considered in the development of policies and programs designed to serve and support women living in rural communities.
