Some efforts to curb smoking seek to make it socially unacceptable. The effects of these efforts can range from countering the idea that smoking is ‘cool’ to actively stigmatizing smokers. But the stigma of smoking doesn’t exist in isolation… In interviews with African American smokers in California, participants suggested that the burden of stigma is not distributed equally, especially for Black women. Instead, smoking stigma intersects with other stigmas related to race and gender.
